Lesson: Sentence Correction Basic - 06

Using The CAT Method

Let's practice using the CAT Method with our example question:

In preparation for their annual meeting, the members of the sewing club makes an elaborate quilt from discarded rags.
makes an elaborate quilt from discarded rags
made an elaborate quilt of discarded rags
make an elaborate quilt from discarded rags
makes an elaborate quilt with discarded rags
make an elaborate quilt on discarded rags
Identify the differences among the remaining answer choices. Your remaining verb choices are "made" and "make." Both would work. How else do the choices differ? Well, should the club members make the quilt "of" rags (Choice (2)), "from" rags (Choice (3)), or "on" rags (Choice (5))? The emphasis is on the quilt, not the rags, so "from discarded rags" sounds correct.
Select the remaining choice or, if more than one choice remains, choose whichever sounds best. Only Choice (3) is left.

In preparation for their annual meeting, the members of the sewing club make an elaborate quilt from discarded rags. Sure.
