Properties Of Sets In Data Sufficiency

Many Properties of Sets questions test your knowledge of the definitions of key terms. The terms include median, mode, range and standard deviation. Properties of Sets questions may also test your knowledge of Permutations, Combinations, and Probability.

  • Median: the term in the middle of a set of numbers. If the set has an even number of terms, the median is the average of the two middle numbers.
  • Mode: the term that occurs most often in a set of numbers. A set can have more than one mode.
  • Range: the positive difference between the largest and the smallest terms in a set.
  • Standard Deviation: a measure of how spread out a set of numbers is about the average (arithmetic mean) of that set. The more spread out the numbers are, the higher the standard deviation of the set.
  • Permutations: the number of arrangements that can be made using all or some of the items in a set.
  • Combinations: the number of smaller sets, containing a specified quantity of items, which can be made from the whole set.
  • Probability: the chance that a particular item or number of items in a set will be selected/indicated.

Standard Deviation, Permutations, Combinations, and Probability will be covered in the Data Sufficiency Challenge Workshop.
