Lesson: Data Sufficiency Challenging - 07t01

Time Is Of The Essence, continued

What is the value of x + y?

1) mx + ny + xn + ym = 10

2) m + n = 6

Can we establish definitive sufficiency or insufficiency for Statement 1 using the statement alone, or do we need to calculate? Select an answer and then click Continue.

1) mx + ny + xn + ym = 10

Statement 1 is sufficient. Statement 1 is insufficient. Calculation is necessary.

The question stem asks for the value of x + y, so we don’t necessarily need to know the values of x and y independently. We need to know only what their sum is. But the equation in this statement has four variables, including x and y, so there’s no way we could get rid of m and n and be left with a numerical value as the sum of x and y. This is insufficient.

Now let’s look at the second statement.
