Lesson: Intermediate Problem Solving - 23

Diagrams And Visualization

Some questions, primarily geometry problems, involve spatial relations. Unfortunately, not all of these problems come accompanied with a diagram that lays out the problem for you. If the question already has a diagram, be sure to use it in answering the question. But if it does not, it is often a good idea to 'translate' the description of the problem to a visual equivalent.

In this way, visualization is similar to translating English to math. Focus on what the question is asking, and transfer the problem to your scratch paper one step at a time.

Let's see how and when sketches can help you to solve a problem.
