Subject/Verb Agreement: Try it Yourself

Task: Identify the subject and verb in each of the following sentences. If they agree, click yes, if not, click no. Then click continue.

1. Janie, with her poodle Fido limping behind her, walk to the dog park.

2. There is a lot of issues involved in this proposal.

This sentence is rather tricky, since the subject ("a lot of issues") follows the verb ("is"). Rearrange the sentence and make the subject come first: "A lot of issues (plural) are (plural) involved in the proposal." When the subject precedes the verb, as it does in the rearranged sentence, it's easier to see that the verb following "issues" should be "are."
