Lesson: Data Sufficiency Basic - 20

Data Sufficiency: All Or Nothing — Is it D or E?

Choice (D) means that either statement by itself would be sufficient. Choice (E) means that neither statement is sufficient alone nor are the statements sufficient when combined. Choice (D) is the most sufficient answer and Choice (E) is the least sufficient answer. Be on the lookout for pairs of statements that let you use this information.

When statements give you the same information, the answer will have to be either Choice (D) or (E). Both statements are either right or wrong.

For example:

(1) Pencils cost 5 cents each. (2) Sally bought 5 pencils for a quarter.

(1) The truck gets 15 miles per gallon of gas (2) He drove 45 miles with only 3 gallons of gas in the gas tank

(1) B is the midpoint of segment (2) is equal to

In each of the examples above, the correct answer would have to be Choice (D) or (E) because each pair of statements provides the same information. Without reading the question, you would have a 50 – 50 chance of getting the correct answer for any of these questions!
