Probability

Probability studies the possible outcomes of given events together with the outcomes' relative likelihoods and distributions. In common usage, the word "probability" is used to mean the chance that a particular event (or set of events) will occur expressed on a linear scale from 0 (impossibility) to 1 (certainty).

Video Lesson - Probability

Probability is just a special type of ratio that represents the likelihood that something will occur.

To find probabilities when all the outcomes have the same chance of occurring, count the number of desired outcomes and divide by the number of possible outcomes:

Probability =

Example:

What is the probability of throwing a 5 on a fair six-sided die?

There is 1 desired outcome - throwing a 5.
There are 6 possible outcomes - one for each side of the die.
So the probability is .
