Lesson: Data Sufficiency Basic - 19

Strategic Guessing With One Statement

When faced with a time constraint or a particularly difficult question, evaluating only one statement will put you into a good position for strategic guessing.

After evaluating only one statement, you can:

  • Eliminate 3 choices if the statement is sufficient.
  • Eliminate 2 choices if the statement is insufficient.

When a statement is sufficient:

  • Eliminate C and E
  • If statement (1) is sufficient, eliminate B
  • If statement (2) is sufficient, eliminate A

When a statement is insufficient:

  • Eliminate D.
  • If statement (1) is insufficient, eliminate A.
  • If statement (2) is insufficient, eliminate B.

Always remember that when you can only evaluate one statement, you can eliminate two or three answers and guess from the remaining choices.
