Grammar Review - Try It Yourself

Use the CAT Method to answer the following in-format question. When you're done, click Continue.
After reading the morning paper, Elijah ate breakfast and will leave for work.
Elijah ate breakfast and will leave for work
Elijah will eat breakfast and left for work
Elijah has eaten breakfast and left for work
Elijah ate breakfast and left for work
Elijah will eat breakfast and leaves for work
Does the sentence continue as you'd expect? As we're reading along "will leave" doesn't sound quite right coming after "ate". Since Elijah's two actions occur at the same time, we're expecting to hear the same verb tense; we're expecting to hear that he ate, and then left. So, we eliminate Choice (1). Choices (2) and (5) also mix tenses (future/past and future/present), so we can eliminate these too.
Choices (3) and (4) remain. Consider Choice (3). It seems that "has eaten" is past tense like "left", but this choice sounds unusual. In fact, "has eaten" is a variation of a past tense, but it is not being used correctly here. Note that it's not necessary to know much about tenses to answer this question correctly; you can hear the errors if you think about how you'd say this.
Only Choice (4) remains.
After reading the morning paper, Elijah ate breakfast and left for work. Sounds good.
