Lesson: Sentence Correction Challenging - 04t01

Modifying Modifiers, continued

Let's try another one. Identify the correct answer choice, and then click Continue.

The company's new billing procedure allows for online payments, in order to save the company and its customers time and money.

procedure allows for online payments, in order to save the company and its customers time and money
procedure allows for the company and its customers to save time and money through the allowance of online payments
procedure, implemented in order to save the company and its customers time and money, allows for online payments
procedure, allowing for online payments, in order to save the company and its customers time and money
procedure allows, in order to save the company and its customers time and money, for online payments

Again the modifier comes at the end, and includes everything from "in order to" through "money." Is it the new procedure or the online payments that will save time and money? We suspect that it's the new procedure, but the sentence doesn't state this clearly. Eliminate Choice (1).
Choice (5) also misplaces the modifier by placing it next to "allows," so eliminate it. Eliminate Choice (4) because it is an incomplete sentence. "Through the allowance of payments" in Choice (2) is an awkward construction, so eliminate.
Choice (3) remains.
The company's new billing procedure, implemented in order to save the company and its customers time and money, allows for online payments. Yes.
