Substitution

The second approach to solving systems of equations is the substitution method. In this approach you use one equation to find out about one variable, and use that information to solve the second equation.

For example, if we know that:

and:

then we can use the second equation to find the solution to the first equation.

The first step is to isolate x in the second equation:

 

This is known as finding x in terms of y.
