Lesson: Sentence Completion - 09

Apply the Process of Elimination to Each Blank

In dual-blank questions, if you can eliminate just one component of an answer choice, you know the whole choice won’t work—so you can toss it out and focus on the remaining choices.

Example

Globalization means that public health and safety is becoming an increasingly _______ affair; nations are now tackling public-health problems _______, through joint research programs.
  1. worldwide . . efficiently
  2. localized . . cooperatively
  3. universal . . publicly
  4. multinational . . jointly
  5. privatized . . realistically

Solved Example

Explaination

The opening words Globalization means tell you that a good completion for the first blank should essentially define globalization. You can eliminate choices (B) and (E) on this basis without even considering the second blank. Similarly, the construction of the sentence’s latter part tells you that a good completion for the second blank should convey the idea of “joint research.” You can eliminate choices (A) and (C) on this basis without even considering the first blank. By process of elimination, you know that the correct answer is choice (D).The correct answer is (D).
