Lesson: Sentence Correction Basic - 03

Getting To Know The Question Type

Sentence correction questions look something like this:

In preparation for their annual meeting, the members of the sewing club makes an elaborate quilt from discarded rags.
makes an elaborate quilt from discarded rags
made an elaborate quilt of discarded rags
make an elaborate quilt from discarded rags
makes an elaborate quilt with discarded rags
make an elaborate quilt on discarded rags

In each question all or part of the statement will be underlined. The underlined section may or may not contain a grammatical error; the non-underlined section is always grammatically correct.

To solve a sentence correction question we'll usually use the non-underlined, grammatically correct part of the sentence to help us figure out if there's an error or awkwardness in the underlined section. If there is, we'll use the information in that correct section to help us select the correct choice for the underlined part. Sometimes the whole question stem will be underlined; in that case we'll use our knowledge of grammar and effective expression to choose the correct version of the sentence.

The first answer choice always reprints the underlined section exactly, so that in reading the question stem you are essentially testing out Choice (1).
